QRNG (Quantum Random Number Generator)

What

Random numbers are the foundation of cryptography - every key, every nonce, every salt depends on unpredictable randomness. Classical computers are deterministic machines, so they can only generate pseudo-random numbers using algorithms. Those algorithms have patterns if you look hard enough. Quantum mechanics provides true randomness. Radioactive decay is random. Photon arrival times are random. Measuring a quantum state in a superposition gives random results. QRNGs exploit these quantum phenomena to generate provably random numbers. QNu Labs' Tropos measures the arrival time of individual photons from a laser. Quantum physics guarantees these times are fundamentally unpredictable - not just hard to predict, but impossible even with complete information. NIST SP 800-90B certifies Tropos's entropy output. True quantum randomness eliminates an entire category of vulnerabilities where weak random number generators made keys predictable. For post-quantum cryptography, blockchain, and any application where security depends on unpredictability, QRNG is the gold standard.

Why

The 2008 Debian OpenSSL bug, the 2013 Android Bitcoin vulnerability, the 2015 Juniper backdoor - all involved weak randomness. Industry estimates suggest 25% of cryptographic vulnerabilities trace to poor random number generation. QRNG eliminates this risk entirely by sourcing randomness from quantum physics where unpredictability is guaranteed by fundamental laws, not engineering assumptions.

Impact

Tropos provides the randomness foundation for all of QNu Labs' security products. Armos uses it for quantum key distribution. Hodos uses it for post-quantum key generation. In hybrid systems, quantum randomness ensures that even if math-based crypto has unknown weaknesses, keys themselves remain unpredictable. For cryptocurrency exchanges, certificate authorities, HSMs, and security appliances, quantum RNG is becoming standard.

Use Cases

Generating cryptographic keys for PKI and TLS/SSL, creating cryptocurrency private keys and wallet seeds, producing blockchain nonces and transaction randomness, initializing hardware security modules, gaming and lottery systems requiring provable fairness, Monte Carlo simulations in finance and science, quantum key distribution seed generation
