Quantum Key Distribution is how you securely share encryption keys using quantum physics instead of math. Two parties - typically called Alice and Bob - want to generate a shared secret key they can use for encryption. Alice sends Bob single photons with random polarizations encoding bits. Bob measures them. They publicly compare measurement bases and keep bits where they used matching bases. Here's the quantum magic: if an eavesdropper Eve intercepts photons, quantum mechanics guarantees she disturbs them detectably. Alice and Bob check for eavesdropping by comparing a sample of bits - if the error rate is too high, they know someone's listening and they abort. If errors are low, they extract a secure key. The security comes from physics, not computational assumptions. No future computer, quantum or otherwise, can break QKD without violating quantum mechanics. QNu Labs' Armos implements QKD with BB84 protocol and decoy states, securing communications for Indian military and financial institutions.
QKD has been deployed in production networks for 20+ years. Banks in Tokyo, government agencies in Europe, defense networks in the U.S. and India use it daily. It's not experimental - it's proven technology protecting real secrets. The advantage: security that doesn't age. RSA might fall to quantum computers in 2035. QKD security doesn't fall because it's based on physics laws that won't change.
For the most sensitive communications - military operations, government classified data, financial institution strategic communications, critical infrastructure control - QKD provides the only long-term security guarantee. It protects against harvest-now-decrypt-later because eavesdropping is detected immediately. Combined with one-time pad or AES encryption, QKD gives you information-theoretic security: provably unbreakable encryption.
